What sealcoating costs in Toledo

Put your driveway in and get a real number, before anyone knocks on your door.

Driveway estimate

Pick the closest shape, or put your own measurements in.

What that price includes

Two coats

Not one. A single coat looks the same on the day and is worn through a season sooner, which is how a cheap quote gets to be cheap.

Crack filling

Hot rubber, in the price rather than added to it. In this climate the cracks are what actually destroy a driveway, and sealer over an open crack is decoration.

Edges cut by hand

The line along your garage, the grass and the apron, done with a brush rather than sprayed at and hoped for.

A firm number first

We measure before we quote and the price does not move on the day unless you change the job.

Why the estimate is an estimate

The number above is square footage times our rate, and it is honest as far as it goes. What it cannot see is the condition of your asphalt. A surface that is sound and grey needs sealer. A surface that is shedding stones, holding water, or cracked through to the base needs work first, and coating over that is money set on fire.

So the estimate tells you the order of magnitude, and the visit tells you the price. If the driveway needs patching before it needs coating we will say so, including the version of that answer where you should wait a year and spend nothing.

Why a cheaper quote is usually cheaper for a reason

Sealcoating is easy to do badly in a way that looks fine for about eight weeks. The three places the money comes out are the same every time: one coat instead of two, sealer thinned past what the manufacturer allows, and cracks left open underneath. All three look identical the afternoon the crew leaves. You find out the following spring.

The other place it comes out is insurance. Sealer on a garage door, a neighbour's car, or a concrete apron is not a small bill, and an uninsured crew's answer to that is an apology.

When it is worth doing at all

Every two to three years for most driveways around Toledo. Not annually: sealer builds up thicker than it is designed to be and then cracks and flakes off in sheets, which is why an annual maintenance plan is usually a sales product rather than a maintenance one.

If your driveway still looks black and water still beads on it, it does not need another coat this year, and we would rather tell you that than take the job. New asphalt is the other case: it has to cure a full season before it will take sealer, so if yours was paved this year, wait.

The season decides the rest

Sealer needs pavement above about 50 degrees and rising, no rain for roughly 24 hours either side, and daylight to cure in. In Northwest Ohio that is late April to around mid-October. Anyone offering to seal your driveway in November is selling you a coat that will peel.

Practically, that means the calendar fills from the back. If you are thinking about it in September, the honest advice is to get on the list now rather than in three weeks.

How much does it cost to sealcoat a driveway in Toledo?

Priced by the square foot after measuring. A standard two-car driveway of about 800 square feet works out around $400, and there is a $300 minimum on any job because the drive, the mix and the hand-cut edges cost the same whether the driveway is small or not.

Is crack filling extra?

No, it is in the price. In this climate the cracks are what destroy a driveway, and sealer laid over an open crack is decoration. Quotes that add crack filling as an extra are usually quotes that intend to skip it.

Why is your price higher than the quote I got?

Usually because of what is in it. The three places a cheaper quote finds its money are one coat instead of two, sealer thinned past the manufacturer's limit, and cracks left open. All three look the same the day the crew leaves and different the following spring.

How late in the year can you sealcoat around Toledo?

Sealer needs pavement above about 50 degrees and rising, no rain for roughly 24 hours on either side, and daylight to cure in. In Northwest Ohio that puts the season between late April and roughly mid-October. After that, cold nights and heavy morning dew stop it curing properly. Anyone offering to seal in November is selling a coat that will peel.

How long do I have to stay off it?

Twenty four hours, and forty eight is better if the weather is cool or damp. Foot traffic is usually fine before vehicle traffic. The one thing to avoid for the first few days is turning your wheels while sitting still, because power steering scuffs fresh sealer.

Are you insured?

We are setting up general liability cover as part of forming the business, and no commercial work gets booked before it is in place. Ask us where that stands when you call and you will get a straight answer rather than a brochure line.
